The goal of the Molimo project is a open, customizable database for everyone - Just like the one from the well known search engine company but not just free but truely open.

The question is why to create such a service, if there is already a similiar available and that one is also for free. My answer to this question is that I see this vision as a threat - a single company holding the data of all people in the world. In my opinion this data should be owned by the creator or by the community and it should be only of their business what to do with it or not - more like the Wikipedia project

And the resulting project would also be better for everyone as the community could add features that no company has intented or thought of. Just like in many open source projects before.

So far the project is not ready to be released, but a great part has already been developed as the database backend is nearly finished: It exists a generic DB mapper that can handle runtime changes of attributes and types - This would be the base of the system.

As next parts there need to be done a web service layer and a end user web interface.

If you are interessted in participating, just go to the sourceforge page, check out the "molimo-db" CVS module and discuss things to be done in the forum or mailing-lists there.

And always remember - it should be fun.
